Common Roof Cleaning Issues in Cardiff

With its rain and mild temperatures, Cardiff’s weather is ideal for moss, lichen, and algae to grow. Moss can lift shingles and tiles, leading to leaks. Being near the sea also means higher salt levels, causing more wear and tear.

Regular roof cleaning in Cardiff is necessary to avoid expensive and inconvenient damage. Older buildings often have slate and tile roofs needing special care, so gentle and effective cleaning methods are important to keep them intact.

Types of Roof Cleaning Services Available

  • Soft Washing

Soft washing is a gentle, eco-friendly way to clean delicate roofs like slate and tile. It uses low-pressure water and biodegradable cleaners to remove dirt, algae, and moss. This method reduces the risk of roof damage while effectively cleaning and disinfecting.

  • Moss and Algae Removal

Moss and algae can damage your roof by trapping moisture and causing decay. Professional removal uses special tools and treatments to get rid of them safely. This helps keep your roof in good shape, lasting longer and looking nice.

  • Pressure Washing

Pressure washing uses high-pressure water jets to clean tough dirt and stains. It’s effective but must be done carefully to avoid damaging your roof. It’s usually used for strong roofing materials like concrete tiles and is great for dirty roofs.

  • Roof Coatings

After cleaning, use a protective roof coating to stop moss and algae from growing. It acts as a barrier, repelling water and stopping unwanted growth. This can extend the time between cleanings, keeping your roof looking good longer.

Our Roof Cleaning Methods

  • Low Pressure with Whirlaway

Roof can be cleaned from a scaffold tower or cherry picker basket or from a ladder if necessary, using a whirlaway on a telescopic wand. Pressure used is the minimum required to achieve the desired result. That of cleaning away moss/debris from the roof being cleaned.

This can be enhanced by using a steam cleaner but this pushes up the price because it uses more equipment and requires diesel to function. This however leads to the best results. A steam cleaner used in conjunction with the pressure washer and whirlaway on a telescopic wand is our preferred method.

  • Roof Scraping

This method can be used where the client is concerned about the existing condition of their roof. This is where moss/debris is scraped from the roof surface.

This however can lead quite easily to the roof surface being scratched, and in our experience, still exposes pre-existing faults with the roof.

  • Biocide Treatment

We prefer to use a biocide treatment on the roof after cleaning or scraping. This is applied as a spray and extends the life of the cleaning process by several years. (This varies according to environmental conditions.)

  • Roof Discolouration

Most roofs become discoloured with time. Apart from natural slate roofs and roofs made of clay tiles, roof materials have a coloured surface which sits as a coloured coating on the surface of the tile or man-made slate. This fades with time meaning that the dark colour on the slate is often made up of the dirt that sits on the surface of the roof material. Thus, when the roof is cleaned, the surface that remains is often a much paler colour than that which existed previously

  • Roof Faults

Often roof cleaning will expose cracked tiles and other defects permitting the owner to have the roof repaired.

Our Step-by-Step Roof Cleaning Process

  • First, the roof is inspected for moss, algae, and dirt. This helps tailor the cleaning to your needs.
  • Next, moss and other growths are removed using tools and techniques that suit your roof. Then, the roof is washed with soft or pressure washing depending on its material and condition.
  • Finally, a detailed check ensures everything’s clean and in good shape. Any final touch-ups are done, leaving your roof ready to face the weather.

Roof Cleaning Solutions for Different Roofing Materials

  • Tile Roofs

Tile roofs are tough but need gentle cleaning to avoid damage. Soft washing is perfect because it cleans well without harming the tiles. This keeps the tiles safe and whole during cleaning.

  • Slate Roofs

Slate roofs on historic buildings in Cardiff need special care. Using a low-pressure wash with the right cleaners keeps them clean without damage, maintaining their look and function.

  • Metal Roofs

Metal roofs are tough and need different cleaning methods than tile or slate roofs. We can use pressure washing to clean them effectively. Adding a protective coating afterwards helps stop rust and keeps the roof in good shape.

Roof Cleaning FAQ

  • Is it a good idea to clean your roof?

Yes, cleaning your roof is good for how it looks and lasts. It stops moss, algae, and debris from causing damage and shortening its life. A clean roof also boosts your home’s curb appeal and can raise its market value.

  • Is it worth removing moss from a roof?

Removing moss from a roof is important because moss holds moisture, which can cause damage over time. Clearing it protects your roof and prevents expensive repairs. Hiring professionals makes sure it’s done safely and effectively.

  • What is the cheapest way to clean a roof?

The cheapest way to clean a roof is often by doing it yourself. Mix water with mild soap and use a soft brush to scrub. It’s best to hire professionals for safe and effective cleaning.

  • What time of year is best to remove moss from a roof?

The ideal time to remove moss is in spring or early summer. Mild weather helps the roof dry well after cleaning, reducing moss regrowth. It’s also a good time to get your roof ready for bad weather later in the year.

  • Can you pressure wash a roof to remove moss?

Pressure washing can remove moss, but be careful. High-pressure water can damage shingles and tiles, so it’s not always suitable for all roofing materials. It’s safer for strong materials like concrete tiles and should be done by professionals who know how to adjust the pressure to reduce risk.
